EASTWEST Purchases Cello Studios in Hollywood

EASTWEST has purchased the famous studios (formerly known as United Western Recorders and Cello), for $5 million. An additional $3 million will be invested into recording equipment and a remodel of the non-technical areas and exterior by French design superstar PHILIPPE STARCK.

This will be EASTWEST's world headquarters and a total 'sounds' facility, with studios, soundware and software development all under one roof.

"Part of me just wanted to save it from the wrecking ball, as the studios are located right on Sunset Boulevard in the heart of Hollywood and we were bidding against a real estate investment trust who surely would have torn it down; however EASTWEST and it's premier brand QUANTUM LEAP have a real need for great sounding recording rooms which will provide us with unlimited studio time to make even better products." said Doug Rogers, EASTWEST founder and producer. "We are determined to make this a Hollywood landmark again, and it will be even better than before."

Both HOLLYWOOD HERITAGE, an organization dedicated to the preservation of Hollywood landmarks, and the Los Angeles CRA (Community Redevelopment Agency) have personally thanked Rogers for saving part of AMERICA'S CULTURE.

According to the RIAA this studio complex has received more Gold and Platinum records, and more engineering awards, than any other studio in the world. It was recently one of only 15 studios featured in the book "Temples of Sound".

The 21,000 square feet studio complex has 5 studios that are very famous for their acoustics. In addition, the studio has a mic and equipment collection that is the envy of the industry.

After completing the purchase, Rogers found and purchased a tube EMI REDD console (1 of 6 in existence), EMI TG12345 console (1 of 14 in exsistence), Studer J-37 and C-37 tube recorders, all of which were used to record every Beatles record ever made at EMI Abbey Road, for a vintage room that also includes original Helios channel strips as used by the Stones, Hendrix, and Zeppelin at Olympic. Most of the "time-proven" vintage equipment that contributed to the great records of our time will be available in this room to provide us, and visiting engineer/producers, with an extensive palette of sound colors to work with." said Rogers.

The studio was built in the 60's by the legendary Bill Putnam, with funding from Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, who started Reprise records here and recorded many hits in Studio 1, which is large enough to hold a 70 piece orchestra.

In the beginning artists like Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Nat King Cole, Johnny Mercer and Ray Charles were recording the hits of the day. Sinatra classics such as, "Strangers In The Night" and "That's Life" were recorded here, and the legendary Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" album, which was the inspiration for The Beatles' "Sgt. Peppers" album, was recorded here also. The Mamas and Papas "California Dreamin", "Monday Monday", and Scott McKenzie's "San Francisco" were recorded here. Elvis Presley recorded his 1968 Christmas special in Studio 1. Famous themes for film and television were recorded here including the MASH theme, Mission Impossible theme, Hawaii Five-O theme, Beverly Hillbillies theme, Godfather Theme, plus much of the Monkees and Partridge Family television series.

It would be impossible to name all the musical royalty who have worked at EastWest Studios during the past 45 years, but some of them are (in alphabetical order) Christina Aguilera, Herb Albert, America, Paul Anka, Fiona Apple, Audioslave, Franky Avalon, Barenaked Ladies, Better Than Ezra, Blondie, Buffalo Springfield, Burt Bacharach, Beach Boys, Blink 182, Glen Campbell, Canned Heat, Vickie Carr, Carpenters, Johnny Cash, David Cassidy, Ray Charles, Chicago, Ry Cooder, Elvis Costello, Count Basie & Orchestra, Eric Clapton, Nat King Cole, Natalie Cole, Ornette Coleman, Duane Eddy, Jan & Dean, John Coltrane, Petula Clark, Joe Cocker, Sam Cooke, Bing Crosby, Bobby Darin, Sammy Davis Jnr, Jackie DeShannon, Duke Ellington, Neil Diamond, Fifth Dimension, Bob Dylan, Ellla Fitzgerald, Benny Goodman Big Band, Grateful Dead, Grass Roots, Green Day, Guess Who, Lani Hall, Herbie Hancock, Hawaii Five-O theme, Don Ho, Whitney Houston, Howlin’ Wolf, Janis Ian, Ike & Tina Turner, Incubus, Isley Brothers, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Stan Keaton, Carole King, Kris Kristofferson, Franky Laine, K.D.
